Why Growlift doesn’t do automated backlink exchanges.
Some SEO platforms ship automated networks that match your site with others, exchange outbound links for inbound ones, and call it AI-driven topical relevance. Google classifies this as a link scheme. Sites caught participating get manual actions, de-indexed pages, or quiet ranking devaluation. The penalties usually arrive months after the network has already been compromised.
We chose not to ship this. The next two sections explain why, with sources, and what we offer instead.
What Google actually says.
From the Google Search Essentials “Link spam” documentation (currently live):
“Excessive link exchanges (‘Link to me and I’ll link to you’) or partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking” is listed as a link spam practice that violates Google’s policies.
Adding “AI” or “topical relevance” to the matching algorithm doesn’t change the underlying pattern: a network of sites linking to each other for the sake of the link is a link scheme. Google’s spam systems are very good at detecting unnatural link velocities, mutual-link footprints, and the topical convergence of typical exchange networks.
The penalties take many forms. Manual actions are the loudest. Most damage happens quietly through algorithmic devaluation: the links stop counting, your domain’s outbound signals lose trust, and over time the ranking signals you’ve been spending real money to acquire stop helping you rank.

What about disavowing if you already participated?
Google’s Disavow tool exists for this. If you’re leaving a backlink-exchange network, the standard recovery playbook is:
- Export the full list of inbound links from Google Search Console.
- Identify the links that came from the exchange network (often share a common footprint: same hosting, similar anchor text patterns, same outbound link counts).
- Submit a disavow file targeting those domains.
- Wait 60-90 days for the algorithmic effect to clear.
- Resume building authority through real outreach, content, and PR.
This is recovery, not prevention. The prevention is to never join the network in the first place.
